As the barbecue season arrives, wine choices tend to become a little more relaxed, a little more sociable and, ideally, a little more refreshing. While big reds can sometimes feel too heavy for warm evenings and lighter summer food, this is the perfect time to think about wines with freshness, versatility and plenty of charm.
Barbecues bring a wide range of flavours to the table, from grilled chicken and seafood to charred vegetables, sausages and sticky marinades, so flexibility is key. Crisp whites, dry rosés and lighter reds all come into their own here, particularly when served at the right temperature. Whites and rosés should be nicely chilled, while lighter reds benefit from 20 minutes in the fridge before serving, especially on a hot day.
It is also a wonderful moment to celebrate local wine, particularly with English Wine Week running from 20–28 June 2026, an annual campaign coordinated by WineGB to encourage people to explore and enjoy English wine.Â
We are fortunate to stock Fair Mile sparkling wines, which we rate highly for their elegance, freshness and food-friendly style. A good English sparkling wine is a brilliant barbecue partner, not just for celebrations, but alongside grilled prawns, smoked salmon, chicken skewers or even simply as an aperitif while the coals warm up.
Summer drinking should feel easy, generous and full of pleasure, very much like a good barbecue itself.
