We were lucky enough to visit the Cape in March this year and our first visit took us to Annandale Wines.

This farm dates back to around 1688 and is the oldest farm in the Helderberg Valley. You can sense the history from the moment you drive up to the barrel cellar. The farm is far from the usual manicured lawns, pristine white buildings and slick signage one normally associates with visits to wine farms.

It is essentially residence and working environment for the no nonsense charismatic winemaker, Hempies du Toit. This giant ex-Springbok rugby player makes some stunning red stuff!

After the second world war the farm became a shelter of abandoned and abused horses and was a riding school. It has now returned to its roots and is home to 45 hectares of red wine grapes. Their logo and wine labels reflect a horse head as a nod to the horses.

His best known wine must be the “Chalbert” which is the wine chosen by Prince Albert of Monaco to drink at his wedding to Charlene.

We have been promised a little of this but it will be very limited. WATCH THIS SPACE!

However, his Cabernet Sauvignon made in the old world style and spent 8 years in French barrels as did his Cavalier Blend. Both of these will make welcome additions to the Cape Wine and Food stable.

However, his Shiraz with it’s bees wax tip was outstanding. I can’t wait for you to taste this!

We are also hoping that we will be able to import some of his port style wine CVP which was so moreish.
